Catherine Gomez, 17, was killed while using the crosswalk at the intersection of Vineland Ave. and Pacific Ave. Ramon Ramirez Jr., Ms. Gomez’s boyfriend, was also hit in the crash. Mr. Ramirez reportedly suffered a broken leg and required extensive surgery, according to his father. A friend of the couple at the scene, Valentine Mejia, says that a vehicle ran through a red light and hit the couple.

Mr. Mejia also says that he grabbed the keys from the driver of the vehicle to prevent her from fleeing the scene. While the authorities say that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, the driver was nevertheless arrested for vehicular manslaughter and then treated for minor injuries. The incident occurred at 9:55 p.m. on January 12.
