Monica Cantu has been identified by authorities as the deceased in a tragic wrong-way chain reaction collision involving an alleged hit-and-run driver that occurred in Paso Robles on July 15. Ms. Cantu, a 55-year-old local resident, was out driving on Highway 101 shortly before 2:00 a.m. when she witnessed a what has been described as a wrong-way head on collision. She and another driver pulled over to the shoulder but then crossed over to the median to help the injured driver while the wrong-way driver allegedly failed to stop and fled. Tragically, a Ford van driving by hit an object on the road and lost control, striking both of the would-be rescuers. Both victims were taken by first responder for treatment. Ms. Cantu later died in the hospital. The driver’s injuries have been described as moderate. The alleged wrong-way driver, a 40-year-old King City resident named Pedro Alvarado-Torres is being sought by the California Highway Patrol, which has requested the help of any witnesses.
