Ma Duarte, a 44-year-old resident of Madera, has been identified by authorities as the deceased in a two-vehicle collision that occurred on January 10 at roughly 7:30 a.m. in O’Neals. Ms. Duarte was traveling on Highway 41 at the time of the incident. Apparently, Ms. Duarte failed to see slowing traffic in time and was unable to stop her 2008 Chevrolet and skilled into the opposite land. Her car collided with a 2017 Ford driven by 35-year-old Coarsegold resident Amy Mecchi . Ms. Duarte suffered very serious injuries and reportedly perished at the scene; authorities say she was not wearing a seatbelt. Ms. Mecchi reportedly suffered minor injuries. Her 16-year-old daughter, Ella Vermeulen, was apparently somewhat more seriously injured and was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital. The incident is under investigation.
