Jolene “Jojo” Gardner, 33, and Payton Castillo, 9, both from Hawthorne, have been identified by authorities as the deceased n a collision that occurred at roughly 1:00 a.m. January 1 in Garden Grove. The mother and her young daughter were reportedly in a Ford F150 truck on  the 22 Freeway after leaving a New Year’s Eve party when the pickup was hit in the rear by a BMW driven by Melvin Cleveland Branch, causing it to overturn. A third vehicle, a Mazda, also struck the pickup trump containing the young child and her child, and then crashed into the divider. The child reportedly died at the scene while her mother passed on at an area hospital. Mr. Branch was arrested on charges of driving under the influence but reportedly was able to briefly escape from a police vehicle before being apprehended for a second time.

We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased during this difficult time.
