Cristina Garcia has been identified by authorities as the victim in a pedestrian auto accident that occurred in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on November 16. Ms. Garcia is thought to have been on a regular morning walk and collecting recyclables on Hyperion Avenue prior at approximately 6:15 a.m. A tan sedan allegedly driven by 47-year-old school janitor Rick Prieto went out of control, hitting trash cans and the victim who was reportedly on the sidewalk.
Mr. Prieto then allegedly stopped and looked at the damage, although there is some question whether or not he saw Ms. Garcia. Video cameras reportedly caught the action as the man returned to his car and fled the scene. He was later charged with vehicular manslaughter. Ms. Garcia was a 57-year-old wife and mother of a college-age daughter. She reportedly collected recyclables trying to help with her daughter’s tuition.
We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the victim during this difficult time.
